Transformation
Larry Leming, Mission Ministries Director
Transformation is a word that we often hear in many areas today, including spiritual circles. But what does it mean to transform something? In Webster’s dictionary, the word means: a: to change in composition or structure, b : to change the outward form or appearance of, c : to change in character or condition .
The ministry we are highlighting this month can lead to a realization of all three of the definitions given above. What ministry is that, you might ask? It is the ministry of construction.
Construction ministry may be working on a new build or renovating an existing structure. With the new build, you may be starting from the ground up or you may come into the project at a later phase. With existing structures, your ministry may include adding an addition such as a new porch or wheelchair ramp, repairing a part of the home such as the roof or bathroom floors, or simply giving an area a new coat of paint. Whatever the task, you are certainly accomplishing the first two parts of our Webster’s definition; to change composition, structure, outward form or appearance.
However, when construction is provided as a ministry, there is another element that comes into play. That is the third part of our definition which is to change in character or condition. To most people, the obvious goal of a construction ministry project is the transformation of the structure. However, we realize the deeper goal is the spiritual transformation of the homeowner and others that may be present at the job site. Construction is simply the tool that earns us the right to be heard with the Gospel of Christ.

How to do Construction Ministry
If you or your ministry group feel God leading you to participate in construction ministry, then here are a few simple steps to follow.
- Assess the skills of your group in order to pursue appropriate projects.
- Meet regularly to pray for proficiency in your work, safety for your group and for the opportunity to share Christ with those you are helping or working with. For potential projects, you can work through the following organizations or groups: 1) Your local church, 2) Your city planning office, 3) Your local Habitat for Humanity, 4) Other service groups such as United Way and local councils on aging.
- Make sure you have appropriate help and tools for the project.
- Print and distribute a work schedule.
- Take time to also begin building on relationships with the residents of the home and those working around you.
- Follow the God’s leadership as you seek those opportunities to share His love. Transformation will take place in more ways than one!!!!!
