unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity...and Why It Matters
When it comes to young people, a church leader can get frustrated quick. Nothing seems to work because young people today do not seem interested in what the church does or at least in what most churches do. You may have heard of a church with loads of young people, but if you are like most churches you are not one of them. I can relate.
unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity... and Why It Matters by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons
When it comes to young people, a church leader can get frustrated quick. Nothing seems to work because young people today do not seem interested in what the church does or at least in what most churches do. You may have heard of a church with loads of young people, but if you are like most churches you are not one of them. I can relate. In fact, I have two sons who are in their twenties and they were raised in a Christian home and they rarely ever got motivated about what the church was doing. They went because they were dragged there; after all, Dad was the Pastor.
A book that has helped me, not only with my sons, but also with these younger generations is Unchristian, by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons of the Barna Group. Some of the best spiritual conversations I have had with my boys have happened because of this book! Plus, it has given me insight into these young adults; at least I think I am finally starting to understand them.
This book is packed with insights about why young adults today struggle with the church and Christianity. It is not just someone’s opinion, but a compilation of years of research and study of these generational segments. It has changed me. It has changed my thinking and how I view the church. It is titled Unchristian not to describe this generations’ spiritual status but to summarize their view of the church in America. The book goes into depth on their hang-ups like hypocrisy, homosexuality, politics, etc. It is an invaluable aid for the Kingdom-minded Christian.
